David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client, a big consulting firm to recruit an experienced Senior Mining Geotechnical Engineer (Tailings). The position can be based anywhere in Canada.

The Role:


  • Act as a key technical geotechnical resource providing technical direction on and/or senior review of projects and proposals
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams related to the management of mine tailings
  • Participate in the investigations and studies on the potential location of tailings dam sites
  • Be involved in all stages of the design of tailings dams, from concept to construction
  • Technical tasks may also include tailings dam inspections, dam safety reviews, and other studies related to the design and behavior of tailings facilities
  • Knowledge of slope stability, flow, and stress-strain software (e.g., GeoStudio, FLAC, Plaxis, etc.)
  • Ensure appropriate Quality Management System is applied to projects
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging opportunities, trends, regulatory requirements, and best practices e.g., ICMM
  • Provide practical and economic solutions to clients that differentiate the team

Strategic Planning and Implementation 

  • Sustain and grow business across various market sectors
  • Identify/anticipate/evaluate market trends, opportunities, and industry dynamics
  • Innovate and enhance our team capabilities and integrated approach
  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships amongst the consulting community
  • Lead and foster regional marketing and business development activities
  • Develop and execute annual business and pursuit plans for developing new business opportunities and growth, including cross-selling of services
  • Develop and maintain a network of business contacts
  • Develop and manage strong relationships with new and existing clients, field personnel, government, and regulatory agencies 
  • Contribute to the development of complex project proposals/cost estimates and participate in the process of securing new business opportunities or expanding the scope of existing projects


  • Act in the capacity of Engineer of Record (EOR) for tailings facilities
  • Geotechnical engineering, project management, project leadership, and collaboration with staff and managers in other technical practices and business units, locally and out-of-province
  • Provide recommendations on hiring
  • Participate in or delegation of participation in local professional and/or business associations
  • Provide technical expertise and/or direction, and act as a technical advisor to project teams and/or other technical staff within the organization as well as directly with internal and external clients
  • Mentor and/or coach staff
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary project teams, guiding and instructing others
  • Ensure proper implementation and continued use of safety and quality assurance programs and corporate policies and procedures
  • Safety and ethical leadership

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Geotechnical Engineering with a P.Eng. designation 
  • Minimum of 15 years relevant industry experience, since graduation, in geotechnical engineering related services
  • Eligible for registration with APEGS
  • Demonstrated local market knowledge and an established presence and reputation within the local geotechnical consulting and client network
  • Demonstrated record of client growth and leading project teams
  • Must be able and willing to travel for project work away from the home office
