Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounting department activities, processes and procedures including accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliation, cash application/management, payroll and cost accounting
  • Direct the Bookkeeper and Office Manager in accounting procedures and accounting system applications
  • Maintain proper, accurate records and accounting controls
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Direct the Bookkeeper in assisting in the preparation of the regular monthly reports including income statements, balance sheets and any reporting required for financial institutions and project managers; checks information for accuracy and makes adjustments as required
  • Maintain intercompany loan documents and accounts
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
  • Meet regularly with the President, CFO and other senior managers to review financial reports, rental and job reports/results, including variances to budget and point out opportunities for improvement and recommend appropriate action as required
  • Liaise with financial institutions for financing and reporting, the legal team and outside accountants
     Under the direction of the CFO, oversee all year-end reporting, preparation and requirements to ensure timely submission to all required government agencies, financial institutions and third-party accounting firms (including minute books, annual returns, dividends,profit-share)
  • Ensure compliance with all federal (i.e. CRA), provincial and municipal regulations, requirements and submissions with respect to payroll remittances, WCB, GST, property tax assessments; act as liaison with all agencies as required
  • Support the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan
  • Lead and implement all financial activities to support the achievement of the organization's Strategic Objectives
  • Work collaboratively with other employees to implement projects and initiatives that advance the organization’s Strategic Priorities
  • Lead and manage human resources initiatives and activities for direct reports including coaching, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee development, employee recognition and general support
  • Ad hoc responsibilities include occasional and one time responsibilities as needed and identifying any work, issue or task that does not appear to be under the care of any particular Job Description, and proactively resolving the work, issue or task or flagging it to the appropriate co-worker for their attention

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a team environment that promotes inclusiveness and proactive communication among team members
  • Excellent communication skills with strong, written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Well-developed listening, coaching, delegating, training and mentoring skills; advocates a team approach
  • Ability to work independently under pressure
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills; the ability to think and plan ahead and manage multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Excellent decision-making and time-management skills
  • Strong attention to detail to maintain organizational systems
  • Valid CPA designation preferred with demonstrated technical accounting knowledge and experience
  • 3 – 8 years of experience in financial management including a strong background in finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including GAAP
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting computer software; experience with construction software as an asset
  • Experience in the construction and/or residential/commercial rental and leasing industries
