David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered up with a very important client to assist them in sourcing quality candidates for a Controller in Humboldt, SK. 

The Controller position is very important to the short- and long-term success of the organization, as well as its strategic plan. Reporting to the CFO, this business partner will lead the finance function, with a focus on excellence and always keeping the customer’s needs at the forefront. n outlined in the strategic plan.

The Role:
  • Oversee accounting, financial and banking functions, and processes
  • Collaborates with the CFO in the effective coordination of the annual budgeting process and the period forecasting updates
  • Establish and maintain the processes to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the CFO in the development and preparation of internal management reports and Audit and Finance and Board of Director reports.
  • Subject matter expert on financial systems and the interfaces impacting the flow of financial information throughout the organization
  • Delivery of custom reports required to support the needs of key business partners
  • Preparation of statistical reports required by various governmental organizations
  • Developing a relationship with the external auditor is critical, along with the effective delivery of audit requirements on an annual basis
  • Act as a key finance business partner throughout the organization
  • Collaborate with the CFO to ensure that ad hoc requests are supported through the organization

The Ideal Candidate:

Key Competencies:
  • Technical Accounting Leadership
  • An experienced finance and accounting professional who is strong in financial accounting, analytics, and controlling.
  • An ability to understand financial systems and to ensure that the accounting is performed correctly as designed.
  • A familiarity with PSAB and be trained and understand GAAP and have the ability to apply technical accounting skills to meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of products and particular proficiency in the utilization of spreadsheets.
  • A demonstrated track record of driving operational excellence, top-tier service delivery, continuous improvement and innovation, accountability, and the associated team culture.
People Leadership:
  • Experience in leading people would be a benefit. Well-developed skills in coaching, mentoring and developing technical and leadership skills will maximize the benefits to the organization.
  • A champion of best people, practices, systems, and processes. Safety- and process-oriented, with the ability to apply and implement this in a consulting environment.
  • A proven ability to lead, motivate, engage and empower teams in the development and execution of operating plans and activities that are aligned with the broader strategic plan.
Project Leadership:
  • Business and financial acumen, coupled with strong performance measurement and metrics management orientation and well-developed analytical, budgeting, and business planning skills.
Interpersonal Leadership:
  • Strong communication (written, oral, presentation) skills with the ability to comfortably and effectively engage at a variety of levels and with a range of audiences. A particular strength in communicating accounting concepts and explaining the results of analytics.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build collaborative relationships with key stakeholders (internally and externally) and with all levels of management and staff, industry partners and colleagues, and others.
  • Leadership skills as demonstrated through a reputation of credibility and integrity in the field; problem-solving abilities; an understanding of team dynamics and how to manage them; and the ability to successfully organize and execute on multiple competing priorities.
Education and Experience:
  • Commerce or Administration degree with a specialization in Accounting
  • A CPA designation is preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience within a similar position
